The Challenge
Complex scenes with multiple interacting characters often expose the limitations of generative AI. In this personal R&D project, the goal was to create a vibrant storytelling moment—a father and sons on a boat trip—without relying on random generation. The challenge was to maintain strict control over composition and style, proving that a complex narrative scene can be executed deliberately, starting from a solid artistic foundation rather than just a text prompt.
The Hybrid Workflow
We didn’t wait for a “lucky shot”—complex specific scenes rarely happen by accident. The process began with a hand-drawn sketch and a structural color block-in to define the exact lighting and composition. We then utilized our proprietary LoRAs (Studio’s private model assets) to generate specific textures and variations. Instead of accepting full images, we adopted a modular approach: selecting the best water texture from one generation, the perfect sky lighting from another, and compositing them in Photoshop over the original manual structure.
The central character (the boy laughing in the middle) posed a unique technical hurdle: the AI consistently failed to render his specific pose and expression within the group context. The solution was a manual intervention: the character was isolated, rotated 180 degrees to force the AI to process the anatomy correctly, and then manually painted back into the main scene seamlessly.
The Result
A cohesive, joyful illustration that retains the warmth of a handcrafted piece. This project demonstrates that AI is best used not as an “instant art button,” but as a powerful generator of raw materials. When controlled by a skilled digital painter—from the initial sketch to the final polish—it allows for the efficient production of high-quality editorial illustrations without sacrificing artistic direction or copyright ownership.
